The Advance Directives Campaign

In 2025, DignitySA helped to initiate a multi-stakeholder campaign to ensure that there is a sound legal basis for advance directives in South Africa. This builds on the work that we began in 2018 when, together with a parliamentary legal team, DignitySA wrote an amendment to the National Health Act (61 of 2003) to legalise advance directives (living will and durable power of attorney for healthcare). Regrettably a new election and new parliament, and then Covid-19, put an end to this initiative at the time.
