Private and secure, by design
What you upload to and write in the Dignity Navigator is personal. We take your data privacy extremely seriously.
-
Encrypted with AES-256, and stored safely in South Africa. We use AES-256, the widely trusted gold standard for protecting sensitive information, to encrypt all your answers and documents, and we store them entirely in South Africa, in line with POPIA. Your answers, documents and our backups are kept on Amazon Web Services in Cape Town, copied across at least three physically separate data centres, so they would survive the loss of an entire data centre.
-
What you write and upload is private. Our everyday staff tools have no way to access your answers or documents.
-
Nothing is shared unless you choose. You decide which documents to email to the people you trust, and with full access, who can log in to see your Navigator. You can remove anyone's access at any time, though a document you have sent stays with them.
-
You stay in control. Download or delete your information whenever you like.
The Dignity Navigator is a service of Dignity SA NPC, a registered non-profit company and public benefit organisation working for dignity and choice at the end of life since 2011.
Give it to someone you love
For a birthday, for Christmas, or for a parent you would love to see plan ahead: give full access to the Dignity Navigator, a once-off R650. We email them your message and a link, on the day you choose.
Give the NavigatorQuestions
Is it really free?
Yes, for 30 days, with no card needed: The Essentials' five steps and the documents they make, which are yours to keep, whatever you decide. Before your 30 days end, you choose: keep your Navigator with full access, take one more month free, or download everything and close it.
What does full access give me?
One payment of R650, once-off, keeps your Navigator for life: everything stays yours to change, every further course opens, including new ones as we release them, and up to 10 people you trust can log in to see your wishes and documents. There is no subscription and no monthly or yearly fee.
What happens to my information if I don't get full access?
If you start with 30 days free and haven't got full access by the end of the 30 days, or of the free extra month if you take it, your Navigator is locked. We keep everything in it safely, and you can still sign in to read and download it, but you can't change anything or send documents from it. You can get full access, or delete everything, at any time. We email you reminders during the following year, and if your Navigator is still locked a year after it was locked, we delete everything in it and tell you that we have. If you use your login for nothing else, it is deleted too.
With full access, your Navigator is never locked: it is kept for as long as you keep your account.
Do the people I invite have to pay?
No. They create a free account to see what you share with them, and they never pay anything.
Can I give the Navigator as a gift?
Yes. Give full access to anyone by their email address, a once-off R650. We email them your message and a link, now or on the day you choose. You never see anything in their Navigator, and we tell you they have opened it only if they ask us to.
Who else can see my answers?
Only the people you choose. Your trusted people receive only the documents you decide to email them. With full access, you can also invite them to log in, and once they accept, they can read your answers in the areas you chose for them: Healthcare, Estate or Memory. Nothing is shared until you send a document or invite someone.
Can DignitySA ever open my answers?
Only in rare, specific circumstances, through a break-glass procedure, and never through our everyday tools. DignitySA holds the encryption keys. That is what lets you reset a forgotten password without losing anything, and lets the people you invite read your answers.
We will only open your answers for one of four reasons: you asked us for help; a verified request after your death, or if you can no longer decide for yourself; a legal order; or a security incident.
One administrator must ask, giving the reason, and a different administrator must approve. Each confirms with a code from their own authenticator, so no one can do it alone. An approved request can be used once, read-only, for at most 60 minutes, and every step and every document opened is recorded.
We will always tell you when a request has been approved. For a request after your death, or if you can no longer decide for yourself, we also tell the people you invited who have accepted.
Outside the Navigator, the keys can be used only by two senior administrators, each with two-step sign-in, and every use automatically alerts both of them.
Do you use my answers for research, funders or marketing?
No. To understand how the Navigator is used, and to report to our funders, we count things like how many members have finished a step or sent a document. We never use what you write for research, reporting or marketing, and we never sell personal information.
Do I need to be a member of DignitySA?
No. You can use the Dignity Navigator on its own. If you would like to, you can also join DignitySA when you sign up. It is free.
What if I stop part-way?
Everything saves as you go. Stop whenever you like and pick up where you left off, on any device.
Is this legal advice?
No. The Navigator helps you think things through and keep your wishes and documents in one place. Its templates and guides are for information; have important documents checked by a professional.
Who is behind the Dignity Navigator?
The Dignity Navigator is a service of Dignity SA NPC (DignitySA), a registered non-profit company and public benefit organisation.
Since 2011, DignitySA has worked for compassionate care, dignity and choice at the end of life in South Africa. With legal experts, healthcare professionals, policymakers and communities, it works on palliative care, decisions about life support, advance directives and a regulated framework for medical assistance in dying, so that people's wishes are known and respected.
It offers free information and resources for patients, families and health professionals, and trains volunteer ambassadors to represent it in their communities. It publishes its reports and audited financial statements, and every rand from full access goes back into this work.
